JBL PROAQUATEST NO2 Nitrite Refill Pack
Quick test for determining the nitrite content in freshwater/marine aquaria & ponds
- Nitrite is a toxic nitrogen compound which is produced when the bacterial balance is disturbed or when a new aquarium is set up. The test shows the exact nitrite content of the water
- Laboratory comparator system to compensate for water self-colouration: fill glass cuvettes with sample water, add reagents to a cuvette, place cuvettes in holder, read off values on colour chart
- Application: For new freshwater installations: daily for 3 weeks. For new installations in seawater: once a week. In case of fish diseases or fish deaths
- Scope of delivery: 1 nitrite test for approx. 50 measurements incl. 2 reagents, 2 glass cuvettes with screw cap, syringe, comparator block and colour chart. Refill reagent available separately
Healthy aquarium/healthy pond with natural conditions
The correct water values in the aquarium/pond depend on the fish stocking and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it may be polluted. If the values are poor, diseases or algae can form in the aquarium/pond. For a healthy aquarium/pond with near-natural conditions, it is important to check and adjust the water values regularly.
For each water analysis JBL offers water tests in the form of quick tests or colour change tests. These determine a specific value or several values simultaneously. With these water tests algae problems can be detected and negative nitrate, nitrite, potassium, magnesium values etc. can be determined.
Why test:
Nitrite is produced when bacteria break down protein and ammonium. It is normally processed into non-toxic nitrate. Nitrite (NO2) should not be measurable in aquarium and pond water. However, if nitrite is measurable, the bacterial degradation process is disturbed and a concentration of 0.4 mg/l or more is dangerous or even fatal for fish, as nitrite blocks the transport of oxygen in the animals' blood. Water changes and good bacterial starters such as JBL Denitrol or JBL BactoPond provide a remedy.
Recommended nitrite values:
Freshwater aquarium (community aquarium): 0-0.2 mg/l
Malawi Lake Tanganyika aquarium: 0-0.2 mg/l
Planted aquariums with few fish (aquascaping):0-0.2 mg/l
Saltwater aquariums: 0-0.2 mg/l
Ponds: 0-0.2 mg/l
